Build, Lead, and Make a Visible Impact Across Columbia's Parks System
The City of Columbia is seeking a skilled and dependable Crew Leader to support the Parks and Recreation Department's construction and maintenance operations. This position is ideal for experienced construction professionals who want to take the next step in leadership while working outdoors, building community spaces, and maintaining the facilities our residents enjoy every day.
About the Position
The Crew Leader coordinates and leads an assigned work group in the construction, maintenance, renovation, and repair of city buildings, shelters, aquatic facilities, and park structures. This position performs hands-on skilled work, trains employees, and ensures safety and quality across all job sites. Work is performed primarily outdoors and requires strong knowledge of building trades and construction equipment.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and coordinate daily work for an assigned crew, including task assignments, prioritization, and on-site guidance.
Perform skilled construction work including concrete, carpentry, masonry, framing, roofing, plumbing, electrical, HVAC installation, and metal fabrication.
Operate a wide range of light, medium, and heavy construction equipment, as well as surveying equipment and laser levels for grading and site layout.
Assist supervisors with project coordination and scheduling.
Ensure safe operations and compliance with all safety standards.
Perform snow and ice removal during winter months.
Purchase tools, materials, and supplies as needed.
Maintain equipment and schedule routine maintenance.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Three to five years of experience in the construction industry.
Class B Commercial Driver's License with no airbrake restriction, or the ability to obtain within six months of hire.
DOT medical certification required.
Knowledge and Skills Required
Knowledge of construction trades, materials, tools, and safety procedures.
Ability to operate construction tools and equipment safely and effectively.
Skill in reading and applying blueprints, plans, and sketches.
Ability to lead, guide, and train others.
Strong communication skills and the ability to maintain professional relationships in stressful situations.
Ability to keep accurate records and estimate time and materials.
Ability to work on-call and respond during emergencies.
Ability to work in extreme weather and physically demanding conditions.
Work Environment
This position involves frequent outdoor work, exposure to extreme temperatures, loud noise, moving equipment, fumes, dust, and hazardous conditions. Physical requirements include lifting up to 100 pounds, climbing, kneeling, crawling, operating machinery, and maintaining alertness while working in active construction environments.
